Sciatic Nerve Pain Severe pain in the buttocks and down the back or side of either leg is called sciatic-nerve pain; it may occur more frequently as pregnancy progresses. The sciatic nerve is located behind the uterus, in the pelvic area, and it runs down into the leg. We believe pain is caused when the enlarging uterus puts pressure on the nerve.
If you experience pain from sciatica, help avoid it by not doing any heavy lifting. Lie on the side opposite the pain. This helps relieve pressure on the nerve. If you have to stand for any length of time, rest the toes of one foot on some object that is 3 to 4 inches off the ground, such as a thick book (the phone book or a dictionary works great) to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
