Cat kidney disease.Question. A few years ago we lost our Ellie to kidney disease. After that we got two Siamese kittens, Binka and Blossom. They were from a healthy litter and have had all their vaccinations and been neutered. Blossom has always been small, compared to her brother, and I wonder if she could have the same kidney problems as Ellie died from. Blossom is two years old and generally happy although a timid house cat, and she does the things that Ellie did before she died, like miaowing by the sink for fresh water and licking plastic bags. She also pesters when you eat crisps and I wondered if it is because of the salt? I really don't know if I am just paranoid after losing Ellie in such a sad way but could Blossom have a kidney problem at such a young age and can she be screened for it?
Answer. Kidney disease is a very common problem in older cats. but it is much less common in younger cats. However you are clearly worried about Blossom so I recommend you take her to your vet and discuss your concerns. The vet will be able to examine her and may recommend running tests on her blood and urine in order to check her kidney function and to screen for other possible causes of increased thirst such as diabetes. Hopefully she will get a clean bill of health and it will set your mind at rest. source Your Cat Mag.
