Feline Hyperaesthesia,
Why does his skin twitch?

Question.
My Siamese male neuter Chakam has a twitching problem. His skin ripples and he licks his fur. Sometimes he runs around as if very scared. He has been to the vet's many times but they seem unable to help him. It started when he was about 18 months old, after he had been staying in a cattery; although it was recommended by the FAB and was very good. The vet said it was his nerves " Chakam is a nervous cat but 'people ,.' friendly' and adventurous. I'd like to know how to treat .him. I will try anything as it is very distressing. .

Answer.
Although Chakam may be displaying signs of feline hyperaesthesia it is important to consider other possible reasons for this behaviour and dermatological conditions ,that can lead to skin twitching and fur licking need to be ruled out before behavioural explanations are considered. The fact that Chakam is quite a nervous individual and that the behaviour seemed to coincide with a stay in a
cattery which may have been quite a stressful experience for him) does strengthen the case for a diagnosis of hyperaesthesia and the use of medication may be an appropriate step at this stage.

However, it is not possible to advise on medication on the basis of very limited information or without seeing the cat itself. so the best step for you to take now is to approach your vet and ask about referral to a veterinary behaviourist.

In the meantime, instituting environmental approaches to decrease Chakam's anxiety, such as the provision of resting places where he can be high up, placing food bowls around the house, and being more structured with your play sessions, may be beneficial.
