Kitten Litter Training.by Dr Kersti Seksel BVSc (Hons) MRCVS MA (Hons) MACVSc (Animal Behaviour)
Cats are usually considered to be clean creatures and most cats take to using a litter tray easily. But there are some tips to ensure that you have no problems with your kitten litter training. . Pur the litter tray somewhere that is easily accessible for the kitten e.g. not in a downstairs bathroom if the kitten spends most of the day upstairs!
Purr the litter tray away from your kitten's food. Place it away from a passage way or other traffic area. Cats want a bit of privacy too.
Clean the tray daily. Cats don't like dirty toilets any more than we do!
Offer your kitten a selection of different litters e.g. sand, sawdust, paper etc., to find its preference.
Place your kitten in the litter tray after it has eaten.
Praise your kitten when it goes in the litter tray.
If you have more than one cat, the rule of thumb is one litter tray per cat and one extra if possible. Place them all in different locations, not side by side, to prevent one cat blocking access to them.
If your kitten does have an accident, clean up the mess with clothes washing detergents that have enzymatic cleaners. These break down the proteins in urine. Rinse with plenty of water and then spray with an enzymatic neutraliser. Disinfectants or bleaches that are ammonia-based may smell like urine to your cat and encourage it to keep using the area. source Your Cat Mag.
