Tidy cat litter. Why can't we recycle cat litter?
Question. My local council is about Ito issue householders with a separate container for biodegradable refuse. It has invested in a composter, which is far more effective than anything my garden unit can achieve. I was told my wood-based litter, made from waste sawdust, would not be acceptable because cat litters contain deodorants that can affect the com poster. However, straw bedding from rabbits and other rodents was acceptable.
Despite sending details of the litter, which indicated that the only deodorant was the natural smell of the pine sawdust, I was told there is a blanket ban on cat litter. I pointed out that as so many councils were investing in com posters, they had weight in persuading cat litter makers to produce a more environmentally friendly product.
Is the Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) or anybody else pursuing this matter? Puss seems to get a lot of stick from environmentalists can we do our bit?
Answer. It is difficult to estimate how much additions such as deodorants might affect the composting process so I can understand that the easy solution for the local authority is to refuse all litters. Yet many litters would probably be fine if owners could be trusted to differentiate between them! If there is an expert out there on the make-up of litters and how many have various things added to them, then FAB would be interested to find out more.
Local authorities have different approaches to the disposal of used litter. Catteries should contact their local environmental health department to see if there are policies in force. source Your Cat Mag.
