Dog friendly waterways.whipping up some help! As part of a nationwide drive to improve visitors' enjoyment of its 2,000 miles of canals and rivers, British Waterways is launching a cleaner towpaths campaign with the help of Crufts 2004 Best in Show, 'Deedee', the Whippet.
Half the population of Britain lives within five miles of an inland waterway and each year some 4.6 million visits are made by people enjoying the pleasure of a waterside towpath walk, including many dog owners with their pets.
To raise awareness of the campaign and encourage people to pick up after their dogs when visiting the inland waterways, packs of poop scoop bags will be given out by British Waterways and posters will be put up at key canal side locations across the country.
For information on 'dog-friendly' waterways sites across the country, contact British Waterways' Customer Service Centre on 01923 201120 and ask for the free leaflet Water ways to exercise your dog, produced in association with the Kennel Club, or visit www.waterscape.com/dogs, on Waterscape.com the UK's first comprehensive online leisure guide to Britain's rivers, lakes and canals.
The new dog waste bins are sponsored by animal health company, Bayer, makers of the UK's leading dog wormer, Drontal.
