Kennel club, Vulnerable dog breeds update.

In November last year the Kennel Club announced that research had been undertaken to identify and confirm those breeds of dog which are basically of British or Irish origin and may be considered to be vulnerable i.e. those whose numbers are declining and whose status within the world of dogs has diminished over a number of years.

Work was carried out concentrating on those breeds which achieve 300 or fewer registrations each year in the UK and the breeds were identified as follows: Bloodhounds, Deerhounds, Greyhounds, Otterhounds.

Gordon Setters, Irish Red & White Setters, Curly Coated Retrievers, Clumber Spaniels, Field Spaniels, Irish Water Spaniels, Sussex Spaniels.

Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, Glen of Imaal Terriers, Irish Terriers, Kerry Blue Terriers, Lakeland Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Norwich Terriers, Sealyham Terriers, Skye Terriers, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Welsh Terriers. Smooth Collies, Lancashire Heelers, Cardigan Welsh Corgis.

English Toy Terriers (Black & Tan), King Charles Spaniels.

The Kennel Club has received extensive feedback from all the registered clubs of the breeds concerned, giving their views and ideas on ways in which to promote their breed. This feedback is currently being entered on a database and analysed in order to form ideas to allow the Kennel Club to work together with the breed clubs to promote and protect our vulnerable breeds. Having undertaken an initial trawl through the questionnaires, it is clear that different breeds deal with the promotion of their breed in different ways and indeed in some breed different breed clubs are working in different ways. It is therefore important that a full analysis of the information received is conducted before plans can be put in place for further consultation. Once the analysis is completed the working group which will be formed to take the matter forward, will be agreed in line with the findings of the questionnaires. Further information on the development of this project will be issued shortly.
