Advice needed on low protein diets for dogs.

Question:
My two month-old Scottish Terrier X West Highland White puppy had suspected pyometra(A collection of pus in the womb) so she was spayed. My vet then took a blood sample that showed kidney damage and she had to be put on a drip. When Polly finally started to improve, she was put on-a low protein diet which I'm finding quite hard to maintain as she is used to having lots of treats. Could you explain about low protein diets. Can I give her home-cooked dinners and treats?

Vicki Knapp, Essex.

Answer:
I am sorry your dog has developed kidney problems at such a young age. It is certainly possible that she has some form of congenital kidney defect.

Dietary management is vital in helping reduce both clinical signs and improving life expectancy. Low protein foods are important because the kidney has to excrete the breakdown products of protein metabolism. If lower protein foods are fed then fewer of these toxic breakdown products get into the blood and so your dog feels much better.

Low phosphorus foods are equally important. Phosphorus must be excreted via the kidney, so when the kidneys are damaged the blood level of phosphorus builds up. This causes continuing damage to the kidneys and several unpleasant side effects, such as abdominal pain and weak bones.

Research shows us that feeding a low phosphorus, controlled protein, low salt food will help what normal kidney function your dog has left to last much longer. It really is an essential part of controlling the illness. It is very hard to make low phosphorus balanced home-made food, so I would advise feeding what your vet suggests.
