Red Setter Puppy. Is a vet check needed for my red setter puppy?
Question: We are picking up our new Red Setter puppy in a couple of weeks, when he will be around two months old. I've been advised by dog-owning friends to get him fully checked over by our local vet shortly after picking him up. Is this really necessary?
I know he will have to go back to the vet for his second injection but what sort of other checks will the vet carry out? Can they be done at the same time as the injection? I'm a little confused!

Answer: I'd always recommend that owners have new pups checked over by their own vet within a day or two of purchase, and to discuss this with the vendor so that if any major problems are discovered they can return the puppy. Your vet can give a general check including an evaluation of your pup's eyes, heart, limbs and jaw alignment. He can assess any hernias and ensure that flea; worm or ear mite treatments are started promptly if required. Vets can also advise on diet and care for the red setter puppy.
While you could wait until the puppy's vaccination to check all these things, it makes sense to deal with any problems promptly. Also, in the very few cases where a major problem is discovered that might affect the pup's lifespan or necessitate ongoing surgical or medical treatment, it gives the new owner the opportunity to decide whether it is the right pup for them before they fall too much in love with it. source Your Dog Mag.
