My Springer dog is Too excited to travel well Question: I need help to control my eight-year-old Springer cross. She will jump in the car and travel happily but when the car slows down, or when anyone gets out, she goes crazy and jumps ill around, barking like mad. It doesn't matter who is driving the car, or however many passengers there are, and offering her titbits or toys doesn't work either. When we first got her five years ago, I took her to training classes for two years but this had no effect on her behavior in the car.
Answer: I would look at introducing your springer dog to a traveling den (also called a cage or crate) that can then be covered with a cloth or blanket, as I've found this works for dogs that don't travel well. Introduce your dog to the den in the house and feed her in it; also drop treats in it for her and put her bed in there, so that she associates it with positive and rewarding experiences. Have the door closed sometimes so that she goes to it and finds that she cannot get in even though she really wants to!
Don't get a travel den that is too big for your springer dog as this is a waste of time and money; she needs room to stand up and lie down, nothing more. Also, try giving her some rescue remedy 20 minutes before setting off on any journey as this could help her remain calm in the car. source Your Dog Mag.
